Rotary Club Meeting 31 July 2018

Welcome
President Ranald opened the meeting by welcoming members and guests:  Bill Papas (guest speaker), PP Ross Pickard and John van der Linde (Rotary Club of Constantia, South Africa).

Toast
PP Peter Antaw toasted the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran, NSW (where Peter was born). The club was established in 1949 and now has 28 members. It is very active, with a strong GSE interest for farmers, a catering service, and major past support for bushfire emergencies.

Announcements
Visiting Rotarian John van der Linde said that his Constantia club had 24 members, eight of whom were ladies (and who were the hardest workers!)
Luke Keighery noted that five local Rotary clubs had organised a Trivia Night in Chatswood on August 25 in support of Mary’s House. He has booked two tables of eight for the club and is looking for participants. Cost is $25 per head, payable in advance.
Kim Wilkins mentioned the Seven Bridges Walk to be held on October 20 in support of the Cancer Council NSW. Cost is $45 if you join now, but $75 later.
Rob Coote reported that he and President Ranald had met with five other local Rotary Clubs to help raise funds for emergency hay and food vouchers for NSW farmers suffering drought. Stalls will be held in Chatswood on August 26 and September 1. Our club may do a bucket appeal at the Plaza.
PP Paul Sullivan demonstrated the correct way to erect and put away banners to avoid damage to them.
Guest Speaker - Bill Papas
John Gidney introduced Bill Papas, who has been a barber in Northbridge and Willoughby for more than 35 years. Alan Hession then conducted a Q & A session with Bill.
Bill said that he was born and brought up in Willoughby, the son of a migrant family. He operated in Strathallen Ave and Sailors Bay Road until 2015, before moving  to Willoughby Road after much research into a viable location. His present barber’s shop has a coffee shop and shows Fox Sports.  He attributes his success to customers from the local community and the soccer fraternity; to the quality of his haircuts; and to some humour. He noted that barbering had changed a lot, mainly through the influence of middle-eastern styles.
Bill has also been a soccer coach for 35 years, much of that time with women's teams. In his youth he had hoped to become a professional soccer player but gave it up to help support his family.
President Ranald thanked Bill, saying that he was impressed by the success of his small business and by his work with youth on the soccer field.

Sergeant PP Paul Sullivan successfully ripped off cash from many club members for the Charities Account. John Garrett humorously reported on the removal of a bolt from the footpath in Eastern Valley Way. Fay Petrou thanked Chris Switzer for donating two Celine Dion concert tickets. Fay gave the price of the tickets to the Benevolent Fund.

President Ranald closed the meeting at 8.10pm.

SHELTERBOX NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
I am honoured to advise you ShelterBox has been nominated for the 2018  Nobel Peace Prize, the winner to be announced in October.  Whatever the result, this is an amazing nomination and we are truly honoured. The nomination reflects the incredible work done by the ShelterBox staff and volunteers around the world, and to those who have supported us, especially the many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians.

The nomination is also an implicit recognition of the partnership between ShelterBox and Rotary International.  Two great organisations combining their efforts to provide disaster aid wherever it may be required across our world.  I am reminded that last year we helped 32,000 households, or 160,000 people, who had lost everything through conflict or natural disaster. We responded to world events 24 times in the year and deployed aid to 20 different countries. Rotary groups around the world helped us provide vulnerable people with emergency shelter and aid in almost all of the countries we have worked in affected by natural disaster.  In 2017, we also surpassed the highest number of days ever deployed in one year. This includes 84 ShelterBox Response Team volunteers who deployed for a total of 1,530 days. That’s an average volunteer deployment of 18 days each.

I never underestimate the impact of the support of Rotary International, Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarian has to ShelterBox in achieving our goal of no family without shelter.

As we continue to pursue our goal, we thank each and every one of you for the support given, and make an impassioned plea for that support to continue into the future.  As individual organisations we can make a difference in the world; as a partnership we can do even more.

Thank you.

THE 4 - WAY TEST of the things we say or do

1). Is it the TRUTH?
2). Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3). Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4). Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
