Rotary Club Meeting 22 January 2019

Welcome

President Ranald welcomed all members and introduced guest Simon Terrell and guest speaker Michelle Barry from NICU Food from the Heart..

Toast

Rob Coote proposed a toast to the geographically unique Rotary clubs of the world, including those West African countries, the maritime regions which take in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Tahiti and other islands, the world's southernmost club being in Antarctica and the northernmost club being Barrow in Alaska. There is a Rotary club meeting held somewhere in the world every hour of every day.

Announcements

President Ranald reported that 36 members and partners enjoyed the annual welcome dinner at Infuzions restaurant last week.

In the absence of Sally O’Neill, he also reminded members that anyone who has changed their address details needs to notify the Working with Children’s department of these changes.

Garth Carter spoke about the Pride of Workmanship Awards to be held on 9 April at which the Hon Gladys Berejiklian will be presenting the awards. He asked all members to consider any worthy people in the community and to submit the names of potential recipients to him.

President Ranald advised the Bunnings BBQ on 6 January netted $1100 and thanked all those who helped achieve this outcome. The next BBQ will be held on 24 February at Bunnings Chatswood.

Kim Wilkins spoke about the next Book Sale which is to be held on 3 February. He is looking for contributions of good quality books, and for someone to help him move the books from the storage area to the stall on the day.

Andrew Rennie announced that Gallery 307 is holding an Art Auction and Art Sale from 2-16 February with all proceeds going to support research into the childhood cancer Neuroblastoma. He encouraged members to support this cause.

Kevin Tattrie advised that RYPEN is to be held in the next two weeks and also spoke about the progress of the establishment of a North Sydney Rotoract club for young people aged between 20 and 30. The first meeting is to be held on 6 Feb at 6.15 pm in the offices of Trent Zimmerman MP and flyers have been circulated in the North Sydney business district to attract potential members.

RYLA
Kevin introduced Kaos Ludovic and Nicholas Muscat who have recently completed the RYLA leadership course. Kaos thought it the most inspiring course he has ever undertaken. Both he and Nicholas spoke about how much they learned, the experience they gained from the course, and the skills they developed which they can apply to their work and daily life when dealing with people and situations. The connection they made with all the 73 attendees was invaluable and they felt they have made lifelong friendships.

Sergeant's Session

John Turner conducted the first Sergeant’s Session for the year and extracted loose change from those present.

Guest Speaker - Michelle Barry - NICU Food from the Heart

Valda Andrews introduced guest speaker Michelle Barry from NICU Food from the Heart. She is a health professional who set up a business to support the families of sick babies in the neo natal intensive care unit (NICU) at RNSH by providing food and nutrition to fathers and mothers of mainly premature babies who can often spend weeks and months in the unit.

Prior to Michelle’s initiative, the parents' lounge in the NICU provided only tea, coffee and bread. The hospital itself does not provide any food for parents, and therein Michelle saw a need. In 2016 she set up a Brekkie Bar in the parent’s lounge with the help of donations from Sanitarium who provided cereals and breakfast bars. The Brekkie Bar is stocked up on Thursdays and the food lasts 3 days. Since commencing, she now receives donations from the likes of Bakers Delight, FruitEzy and Kelloggs. All this gives stressed parents the opportunity to have some nutritious food without having to leave the ward to search for it elsewhere in the hospital. It also gives the parents the opportunity to spend time in the lounge with other parents undergoing similar experiences.

In 2017 Michelle started a new initiative and contacted several restaurants in the area to help her establish “Dad’s Night”. On a 6 weekly roster, restaurants like the Hayberry, Chargrill Charlie’s Lane Cove and Café Geo prepare meals which are picked up and delivered to dads at the hospital which also gives them an opportunity to bond with and provide support to other dads in the NICU.

NICU Food from the Heart also undertakes other initiatives which you can read about at www.lifeslittletreasures.org and on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NICUFoodFromtheHeart2016/ .

Fay Petrou thanked Michelle for her very interesting talk and for informing us about this most worthwhile initiative at RNSH.
